Elton John opened up in emotional detail about one of the most private moments he ever shared with the late Princess of Wales. While their public bond was widely known — from their frequent charity appearances to his legendary performance of "Candle in the Wind" at her funeral — Elton says there was a side of Diana that few ever saw, and one secret in particular he had kept until now.
A Midnight Conversation That Changed Everything
Elton recalled a late-night phone call with Diana in early 1997, just months before her death. According to him, she called unexpectedly around midnight, sounding shaken and tearful. "She was scared. She didn’t say it outright, but I knew something was wrong," Elton said during the interview. “She told me, ‘I feel like I’m being watched, like I’m not safe anymore.’ That conversation has haunted me for years.”
The singer emphasized that Diana didn’t name specific individuals but hinted at pressures from both the media and people within the royal establishment. “She felt trapped between two worlds — trying to live a private life while still being hounded for every move she made. She told me she didn’t trust many people anymore,” Elton revealed.
The Private Letter
Even more surprising was Elton’s revelation that Diana had written him a letter, only days after their emotional phone call. “It was handwritten, very personal,” he said, holding back tears. “She said she was trying to find her voice, to take back control of her life — but that she feared she was running out of time.”
Elton said he kept the letter locked away for decades, unsure whether to ever share its contents. “I didn’t want to exploit her words. But I think now, with so much misinformation over the years, it’s important people remember she wasn’t just a tabloid icon. She was a real person — vulnerable, powerful, and deeply compassionate.”
