Queen Camilla, who became Queen Consort upon King Charles III’s accession in 2022, will experience a traditional change of title when Prince William succeeds to the throne. This transition marks the customary and expected adjustment in royal titles when a reigning monarch abdicates or passes, making way for the next generation.
During King Charles's reign, Camilla was styled "Her Majesty The Queen Consort" and officially crowned alongside Charles in May 2023, reflecting her full status as queen in accordance with English common law. This title distinguished her from the late Queen Elizabeth II while affirming her position as the nation’s foremost woman in the royal hierarchy.
However, the passing of the crown to Prince William means Camilla will no longer serve as the Queen Consort. Instead, she will assume the title "Queen Dowager," a title traditionally held by the widow of a deceased king. This title recognizes Camilla's dignity and status while formally acknowledging that she is no longer the reigning monarch's wife.
As Queen Dowager, Camilla will retain honors, ceremonial roles, and the respect accorded to a former queen but will relinquish the public duties and function of queen consort. This change makes way for Catherine, Princess of Wales, to adopt the role of the new Queen Consort as William's spouse.
Reports indicate Camilla and Charles currently reside at Clarence House, a residence favored for its quieter setting compared to Buckingham Palace. It remains unclear if Camilla will continue to live there after William's accession or relocate, but any change would reflect the new household arrangements customary with royal succession.
Public reaction to this anticipated title change has been largely respectful, acknowledging Camilla's contribution and steady presence during Charles’s reign. At the same time, the transition reflects the monarchy's enduring conventions surrounding roles, titles, and protocol through generations.
